Giving Hope, One Heart at a Time

In 2021, the Sir Emeka Okwuosa Foundation (SEOF) established the Dame Irene Okwuosa Memorial Hospital (DIOMH) in Oraifite, Anambra State — a state-of-the-art facility specializing in cardiothoracic care.

Since then, and in partnership with the VOOM Foundation, we’ve conducted seven open-heart surgery missions, delivering 145 life-saving procedures, including:

  • 90 Adult Open-Heart Surgeries

  • 53 Pediatric Open-Heart Surgeries

  • 22 Pediatric Interventional Catheterizations – a first in Southeastern Nigeria

  • 39 Adult Interventional Catheterizations

These surgeries are provided free or at subsidized cost to those in need.

The Urgent Need

Cardiovascular disease accounts for 35% of deaths in Nigeria. Among children, congenital heart disease remains a leading cause of illness and death, yet access to life-saving surgery is rare and often unaffordable.

Sara's Second Chance: A Story of Impact

Sara, a ten-month-old from Enugu State, was born with a life-threatening heart defect known as Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD). Diagnosed at just three months old, she faced severe symptoms including fatigue and weight loss. In late 2023, during our medical mission, Sara received the open-heart surgery she desperately needed.

Today, she’s thriving — a testament to what timely, equitable care can achieve.

Our Solution and Vision

Through biannual missions with U.S.-based surgeons, SEOF and VOOM have provided over $213,000 worth of surgeries at DIOMH. In 2024, we’re expanding our efforts — aiming to treat five more children with urgent heart conditions, while also training local healthcare providers to strengthen long-term capacity.

Your support can help us save more lives and build a healthier future for Nigeria’s most vulnerable.
